Fall 2012 Fashion Week Trends: Chocolate Lids, Bondage Tape Is The New Hair Accoutrement

It's bondage tape holding that 'do up.
As New York Fashion Week continues, I've got more fall 2012 beauty trends to share. We're seeing lots of chocolate brown eyes, haute hair adornments and that classic 70s trend: matching your lipstick to your nail color. Read on...

Chocolate Lids
At Imitation by Tara Subkoff, Tina Turnbow for NYX Cosmetics was inspired by Helmut Newton and Debbie Harry in the early ‘70s, using various shades of brown on the lids for a bold, feminine look. Backstage at Donna Karan, the deep hue was infused with a hint of red for a cherry-chocolate effect while at Theyskens’ Theory, the look was granny chic redux. James Kaliardos for MAC Cosmetics opted for a burnished bronze-like shade nodding to Elsa Schiaparelli.

Hot Hair Helpers
Hair accessories and hats were omnipresent on day fave. In the hat department, Marc Jacobs’ models sashayed down the runway in over-sized Seussian iterations in bold prints, while tiny cabaret hats were jauntily affixed to the models’ heads at Donna Karan. Larger fedoras were featured atop the Dolly Parton-inspired strands at Chris Benz. Moroccanoil’s Orlando Pita used headbands to punctuate the major volume at the crown he created at Carolina Herrera. Aerodynamic hair ruled the runway at Preen. The style was windswept and knotted, held in place with bobby pins. Hottest of all was the bondage tape (purchased at sex shops in both instances!) used by Odile Gilbert for Kerastase behind the scenes at Rachel Zoe and by Luigi Murenu for John Frieda backstage at Zac Posen.

Lips & Tips
At Carolina Herrera, lips were slightly colored with MAC Lip Pencil in Spice, a neutral tone similar hue to that of the nails: Essie’s Not Just A Pretty Face. MAC Cosmetics’ Keri Blair did the nails for Zac Posen’s show, opting for a cream red called Flaming Rose. Said Blair, “We went with the ‘70s trend of having your lipstick match.” It matched the Japanese-inspired lip created with cherry red lip pencil layered with crimson and cherry Lip Mix by MAC Cosmetics. Explained Blair, “When you mix a warm red and a cool red, you get a neutral version, which works on all skin tones.” Lastly, the deep vampy lips at Alice + Olivia were reflected by uber-dark polish, this time decorated with glitter.
