Fictionary: Natural Born Curlers

Fictionary is a column showcasing beauty-related words that don't exist, but should.

Being a Natural Born Curler (which is inspired by the Oliver Stone flick Natural Born Killers by name only--that film is totally fakakta) can be both a blessing and a curse. It's a curse when you're trying to have, say, mandated straight, long-flowing hair for an outdoor wedding in the dead of summer. Or if you get caught in the rain even for a single minute. BUT, when you're on vacation and want to embrace your waves or curls and live sans blow-dryer for a bit (and be on Dryatus), having curls is a GIFT. Why? Because even without heat tools, curls/waves are never lank, they always have at least a bit of volume by nature and with just a little bit of coaxing, they'll hold whatever pattern you twist them into until they dry.

Paul Mitchell's The Truth About Curls line is especially blowing my hair back of late. It's a range of detangling, frizz-fighting defining products that really work. The collection includes:

Paul Mitchell Spring Loaded Detangling Shampoo with zero sulfates

Twirl Around Crunch-free Curl Definier

Full Circle Leave-in Treatment Frizz-free Curl Therapy

Ultimate Wave Beachy Texture Cream-Gel

My favorite of the bunch is the Ultimate Wave. I like to dry my roots/bangs with a blow-dryer, then apply about a nickle's worth of the cream-gel hybrid to my hair from the ears down. Then, I separate my hair into about 5 sections and twist them into long coils, away from my face. At this point, my hair's about 70% dry so it'll maintain loose waves once fully air-dried and I can simply rake my fingers through my mane for a beachy effect. The Ultimate Wave leaves my hair smooth and frizz-free, yet defined. It's a product for the aughts, not a crispy '80s/'90s wave.  And the Full Circle Leave-in Treatment? Divine. Curly hair absolutely REQUIRES leave-in conditioner. It's a truth universally acknowledged that you can't be too rich, too thin or have hair that's too hydrated--if it's curly. Curly hair's more porous and dry by nature, so a little frizz-fighting humectant will do a world of good.
