Five Rules For Life: India Jewel Jackson

India-Jewel Jackson's posts for xojane are a must-read. Por ejemplo? A very straight dude I went to high school with whom I haven't seen since the '90s happened to read one of her articles I linked to on Facebook and went so far as to comment on how much he enjoyed it. Okay? She freelances there, among other outlets and has an affinity for the queen's English, savvy vintage shopping haunts and spicy vegetarian fare. Since she moved to London this year, I've sorely missed our frequent Ethiopian dinners and cocktail and goss seshes post beauty event. She's a good Judy for sure AND she recognizes the importance of serving Drake eyebrows to the kids. Here, her Five Rules For Life, in I-J's words.

1. Pay attention to the little things.
Frizzy flyaways, unkempt eyebrows, cheap taps on your shoes, et al seriously detracts from your overall look, which is only as good as the sum of its parts. Always dot your I's and cross your T's, aesthetically speaking.

 2. Always keep your nails painted.
It's the easiest, most affordable way to always look polished (pun intended) and put together. It's the one girly indulgence we all can enjoy. Just pick a few shades that work best for you, and remember, when you start to chip--it's high time to switch.

3. Shop smarter.
Trends are just that--trends. They come and go, so spend your hard earned money where it really matters--on the trimmings, a.k.a. your shoes and purses. Look for well-made items in timeless cuts, like black Christian Louboutin Rolando Platform Pumps and Chanel 2.55 purses. They're perfect purchases--they work everywhere from the boardroom to the block, and ups the ante on affordable trendy pieces from Forever21, Zara, H&M, and Mango. Bonus! They also make basics from Gap, Uniqlo, and American Apparel look like you bought them on the 8th floor of Barneys.

4. Don't forget to work hard.. ...As all hell. The economy is still quite unpredictable, so do everything you can to ensure that you're not expendable. Always, always, always be willing to go the extra mile with your work. Taking those few extra steps today just might save your ass tomorrow.

5. But with that said... ... Take time to treat. Yo. Self.

(Y.O.L.O.--I hate that acronym, but it fits.) Life is far, far, far too short to worry about your finances every. single. second, so if there's something that you want that's far out of your budget--eff it, treat yourself anyway. (Within reason, of course.) Create a budget and make a few cuts where necessary; do whatever you need to do to buy yourself that big ticket item. You'll love it all the more when you remember what you went through to get it.

Thanks, India!
