5 French Riviera-inspired Manicures

Thanks to a recession redux, sequester and/or fiscal cliff, nails are still the hottest way to wear the hippest shades on the cheap. DIY your mani and you're beyond fiscally virtuous! With such emphasis on nails as there has been the past several seasons, the old faithful classic, sheer and muted tips have taken a backseat to opaque hues inspired by the bold colors of the French Riviera. Here, some ways to wear them.

1. Moon Manicure
If you’re having major separation anxiety from the outdated la manucure en Français, then try the moon manicure. It's a more pigmented, flipped version of the nail style you know and (once) loved. For an at-home iteration, try sticking paper hole reinforcements over the moons of your naked nails (the white semi-circles at the base of nails) before painting on your color to get the curve exactly right. You know, those adhesive rings designed to repair and strengthen punched holes in paper from your high school days? Use those as your stencil. As for colors, I love shades of aqua that mimic that of the Mer Mediterranee. Try CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss in Mint Mojito and Constant Caribbean.
Tip: For extra flair, rock an accent nail in orange.

2. Cloud Nine
Cirrus, nimbus or cumulus? This nail look is pretty easy to achieve, though it looks to be otherwise. First, paint two coats of blue polish (try CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss in Out Of The Blue) and let it dry. Then, carefully construct a cloud — it’s easy to do, as it doesn’t have to be perfect — on top. To create the cloud, simply load a white polish (try CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss in Snow Storm) onto a makeup sponge and tap onto nails. Let the design dry, then paint over the top with a top coat to seal the look.

3. Super Stripes
If you’re sartorially stranded in solids, channel your print envy via your talons and give a shout-out to the Riviera's bright styles. Using a steady hand, draw crisp lines in multiple hues onto a base color using a nail art pen or the ballpoint-pen-dipped-in-polish trick in either horizontal, vertical or zig-zagged stripes. If your polish is thick, try adding a drop of acetone nail polish remover to the bottle and roll with the lid closed in the palm of your hand to thin the mixture. Try CoverGirl Outlast Brilliant Nail Gloss in Non-Stop Stone and Snow Storm.
