5 Things I Learned From Corset Training For A Week

"After birth I wore a double corset for three months. It was sweaty but worth it," revealed Jessica Alba recently. In the name of slimming down for summer, doing as Jessica Alba does (WWJAD?) and because I know it aided Dita Von Teese achieve her rockin' hourglass bod, I decided to test-drive the Slimming Waist Cincher by Leonisa. It's retro, it's fun, and Jessica donned TWO, so surely I could wear one, right? Here's what I learned in my quest for a smaller waist-to-hip ratio.

1. This straight up hurts.
Yes. I ordered a medium, as that's usually my size and felt like I was hook-and-eyeing myself into an extra extra extra small. The plus side? Your rack will look gargantuan--even if it's not. Call it the Jessica Rabbit effect.

2. It really took my waist down two full inches.
While I found that I'm a wuss and could only commit to wearing it a couple hours a day, I did like that it went far above and beyond Spanx to whittle my waist.

3. My posture improved.
That was definitely a plus. What was not so much a plus was that I couldn't work on my couch hunched over my laptop, as I normally do. Instead, I sat in a proper chair like a PERSON in a world and filed my stories. Sitting or standing anything less than perfectly perpendicular to the floor resulted in discomfort. While irritating at first, I got used to it and have been working on sitting up straighter and taller even sans corset.

4. It's Hades-hot.
Yeah, it's a bit warm in there. Maybe jack up the A/C a bit or save corset training for the colder months of the year.

5. A pedicure with a friend will be slightly awkward.
Did you even realize you're at an obtuse angle when you're pedicuring? Me neither, till I pedicured avec corset. All in all, it worked out, but when I shifted legs, I looked a bit like I was doing The Robot.

In the end, I've been wearing the corset in lieu of compression tights for special occasions. However, I do want to see if I can get my waist down permanently an inch or two when it's colder out and not quite as obvious that I have veritable latex armor on under my clothing. Is corset training something you'd try?

  1. In my case, what I used wasn't a corset but a rubbery pad that can be wrapped around the waist. I reckon it provides the same effect.
